I am an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Memphis. I am continuously looking for self-motivated graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in assisting my research. Interested students (or potential students) are encouraged to visit the Open Positions page for more information.

As an engineering design researcher with expertise in fluid mechanics, control co-design, and computational science, I wish to bridge the gap between the fields of mechanical science and systematic engineering design methodologies. Design research with engineering mechanics knowledge can profoundly impact our society. Exploring unexplored design space via investigating non-obvious design couplings at the interface between disciplinary domains enables unprecedented design innovations. Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) is a tool to solve models that interact with each other concurrently. I am interested in discovering the interacting mechanisms between disciplinary domains to utilize design couplings in solving large complex system design problems.

My ultimate research goals are classified into three parts:

  1. Integrated design under multilevel and multidisciplinary collaborative environment,
  2. Design-appropriate computational and experimental models, and
  3. Modeling and multidisciplinary design optimization of large, complex systems.

I am also interested in renewable energy systems based on aerodynamics (wind energy) and hydrodynamics (hydrokinetic energy). I plan to implement my theoretical and computational design research outcomes to enable unprecedented-scale renewable energy systems, including multi-megawatt-scale floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), hydrokinetic turbines (HKTs), energy harvesters, energy storage systems, and their grid integration. In addition, my research application fields span over heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, aero/astronautical systems (hypersonic vehicles, eVTOL urban mobility, spacecraft attitude control) and battery electric vehicle thermal systems.
